The Gospel, the Church, Justice, and Race

Sundays, June 21-July 26, excluding July 5
Registration closes Saturday, June 20 The gospel of Jesus Christ uniquely and unequivocally compels Christians to work for justice in the world and to promote the equality and dignity of every single person made in God’s image. This means we must be willing to acknowledge and work together against racial injustice. We lament that for far too much of American history, the evangelical church has not reflected these aims as God commands in His Word. As a church, we are completely committed to being a picture of God's justice, mercy, truth, and love in our city and country in this significant time and place in which God has put us.

We hope this will lead to a clear biblical statement of our commitment to one another as a multi-racial church to do justice, love mercy and walk humbly with God. We will pray, fast, read God’s Word, and work together on a statement that summarizes what the Bible teaches about how the gospel and the church relate to justice and race. We will hear from Scripture and listen to one another. In the end, we hope not only to have a clear, foundational biblical statement, but a deeper commitment to doing justice in and through our lives, families, and church.

NOTE: All 5 modules are required for participants.

Class Materials: Purchase Divided by Faith: Evangelical Religion and the Problem of Race in America

This book is intended to introduce participants to unique challenges in multi-racial churches based on research; requiring it does not mean we endorse or agree with every conclusion drawn in it. Participants will be required to submit reflections before and after each module as they process personally through God’s Word and how it affects our lives and our church. If physically possible and wise, participants are asked to fast for at least one meal before each module.
